Eclipse begins with the familiar Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) sitting in their meadow reading Fire and Ice by Robert Frost that is in the front of the Eclipse book. Familiar faces in the characters return. Bella Swan’s mom, Renee (Sarah Clarke) notices that her daughter is very serious about Edward. Screenwriting adaptation changes the visit with Renee. Bella will not see her mother before her graduation so Renee gives her a present. Bella hugs her mother like she may never see her again. And she may not. Bella wants to be a vampire and newborns cannot control themselves around humans. They only thirst for blood.
The Eclipse movie arrived at the identity of the newborn vampire who is stalking Bella very quickly. They know him as a local boy from Forks who went missing last year, Riley Biers (Xavier Samuel). Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) stays unknown to the characters but obvious to the audience. Jacob (Taylor Lautner) pulls Bella deeper into the story of the Quileutes and the existence of the werewolves. The Eclipse movie does fall short when re-telling the story of the spirit warriors and the legend of the cold ones told by Billy Black (Gil Birmingham). We know you cannot tell the entire story but I think it deserved a little more elaboration. The Quileutes who are werewolves are running around the movie shirtless again. Edward even says to Jacob, “Don’t you own a shirt?” Leah Clearwater (Julia Jones) had no problems getting her shirt back on despite phasing into a werewolf.
There is one part where Bella narrates the story and it seems so out of place because it is not throughout the movie. That being said, Eclipse does a fantastic job portraying both Rosalie Hale’s (Nikki Reed) story and Jasper Hale’s (Jackson Rathbone) story of how they became vampires. We understand the dark and dirty world of being a vampire and being a newborn vampire. We understand Rosalie’s frustration with Bella choosing wrong. Jasper reveals that newborn vampires are only good for one thing. Fighting.
Robert Pattinson does a superb job acting as an old-fashioned boy who proposes to the love of his life. Team Edward fans will be fantasizing about that moment many times.
Jane (Dakota Fanning) makes a brief appearance watching the newborn vampires from afar and then after all the fighting. The fight scenes were realistic enough to be believable. The advantage is that vampires move incredibly fast so the scenes were blurry without detracting from the story.
The love triangle between Jacob, Bella, and Edward is evident now more than ever. Team Jacob fans appreciate seeing Jacob shirtless in almost all the scenes. Jacob tells Bella over and over again, “You love me but you just don’t know it”. We find out how much she loves him. Jacob and Edward come to a truce in the tent in a snowstorm because they know that the most important person is Bella. Jacob says to Edward when he at first refuses to let him in to warm up freezing Bella, “You know I’m hotter than you!” Despite Bella’s refusals that she is not in love with Jacob, she does eventually reveal her true feelings to herself and to Edward.
Overall, the Eclipse movie is a great date movie, girls love it and guys can appreciate the fight scenes. The Twilight Saga phenomenon continues with the Eclipse movie. In the theater, there were all different types of viewers including some white-haired ladies who loved the movie. The cinematography showcases the beauty of Vancouver. The computer graphics of the werewolves and the vampires were exceptional.
If you are a Twi-hard, then you know every line Edward utters to Bella throughout the book. You know when the Eclipse movie script differs from the book. You can also appreciate that the entire book will not fit into a two-hour movie. If you are not a Twi-hard, you can still appreciate a movie about vampires, werewolves and a girl-next-door type.
